Edmonton parents are choosing to consume their placentas and reporting an enhanced postpartum experience and faster recovery from birth, both physically and emotionally.

The Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation

Placenta Encapsulation is the process of preparing the placenta for consumption by dehydrating the placenta, crushing it into a powder, and putting it into capsules. The placenta is thought to be nature’s perfect postpartum supplement. Our clients have chosen to encapsulate to:

  • Improve postpartum mood
  • Reduce fatigue
  • Lessen postpartum bleeding
  • Balance their breastmilk supply
  • Replenish vitamins and minerals
  • Decrease their risk of postpartum mood disorders, such as postpartum depression

Placenta capsules are taken over the first few weeks after your baby is born to ease your transition into motherhood, from pregnancy.

The Process of Placenta Encapsulation

When you choose to work with Heritage Birth Services for your Edmonton Area placenta encapsulation, you will be given clear instructions on how to safely transport your placenta home. We will also direct you on how to properly store it until you are ready to have your placenta capsules made.

When you have given birth, you will call your Postpartum Placenta Specialist and arrange a time for her to come to your home. She will arrive with all the equipment and supplies she needs, except for a burner on your stove, your kitchen sink, and placenta of course! Don’t worry about preparing anything for her arrival. We know how busy having a new baby is and are happy to wash up some dishes!

The process of making your placenta into capsules will take two consecutive days. Your Postpartum Placenta Specialist will be with you 1-2 hours each day. Over night she will leave a dehydrator with your placenta safely drying inside.

At the end of the second day, you'll have your placenta pills, and they will be ready for you to take!

Other Placenta Services

Placenta Art Prints

There are many ways to honor your placenta. If eating your placenta is not for you, you might choose to bury your placenta, have a lotus birth, or have placenta prints made. We can make placenta prints for you before encapsulating your placenta.

We create beautiful custom art prints on high-quality art paper using your placenta.

Placenta Tincture

We recommend you take all of your capsules until they are gone. If you’d like to experience the benefits of placenta consumption long term, you can have a tincture made. Some of your prepared placenta is preserved in high-quality alcohol and is used several drops at a time.

Placenta tinctures are usually used to ease PMS symptoms, at times of transition or stress, and may even be saved for menopause.

Placenta Salve

The placenta is thought to be high in stem cells, vitamins, hormones, and nutrients. It may also have anti-inflammatory properties, making it an excellent addition to a simple all purpose healing salve.

You may use a placenta salve for perineal tears, hemorrhoids, on you c-section scar, or for healing other irritations such as eczema, sun burns, and wounds.

Placenta Encapsulation Safety

We hold ourselves to standards that far exceed those in our industry. At this time, placenta encapsulation is unregulated in Alberta. We believe in our responsibility to protect the safety of you, your family, and ours. Our strict safety standards begin with our training. Our Postpartum Placenta Specialists are trained in-person by ProDoula, LLC. We require current Blood Borne Pathogens Certification and Food Safety knowledge.

We have made it a strict policy to only encapsulate in our client’s homes. Choosing to have your placenta prepared in your home means:

  • You stay in control of your placenta
  • You can be confident the placenta you are consuming belongs to you
  • You can be certain your placenta is being transported and stored properly
  • Your placenta won’t be exposed to outside contamination, allergens, children, or pets
  • Our homes and families are not exposed to potential blood borne pathogens

In the past, there have been incidences where placenta consumption may have caused illness. When looking further into the reported incidences, the illness may have been caused by unsafe practices. We prepare your placenta following strict food safe guidelines.

When having your placenta encapsulated by Heritage Birth Services, you can ingest your capsules with confidence knowing we’ve kept it at a food safe temperate throughout the process and taken every possible precaution to protect your health.
